The first quote is about how men will chase their dreams and never take their eye off the gold. Women however, don't pay much attention to dreams, and only focus on what they need to do, remembering what they want and forgetting the rest. I think this quote is Ironic in the since that Janie went far away from this little town, and chased down what she wanted, and lived the way she wanted. The men in the small town however, spend all there time talking about others, and doing there choirs. This shows that the woman chased her dream, but the men sat at home and held on to the memories they wanted, and let go of the rest, which makes the quote opposite of what it is stating.
The second quote is about how Janie feels when she is alone and has no care in the world. She is used to having a busy life with a lot of work to be done, and rarely has time to herself. The quote paints a piccture of the world and nature, and how beautiful things there are in life and around her. But suddenly it hits her that there is so much bad going on around her, and that she is to be merried and she has no intensions in having to get merried. She then relizes that is merriage is a beautiful and free as this nature, maybe it wouldn't be that bad, she just doesn't want to end up with someone she doesn't love, and she wants to be able to pick who she wants to Marry.
