Their Eye's Were Watching God ~ Thesis
Love plays a major role throughout Janie's life, and although she believes to have found love, she has truely missed out on what love really is, and she ends up finding it best, when she isn't looking.

Their Eye's Were Watching God ~ Important Scene 2
The scene where Janie and Joe get into a big fight in the store is an important scene. It sets the picture for how the two stop getting along and begin to fight and their once loving relationship is gone. It shows that Janie finally got up the courage to tell Joe that she was sick of the things he made her do. She didn't want to have to listen to him anymore because he didn't do anything for her. At this point she was so angry she didn't care who heard or how embarrassed she would make him, because she had so much anger within her, that she just couldn't take it anymore. Joe was so angry for what Janie had done that he turned around and hit her right infront of everyone. From that point on Janie and Joe stopped sleeping in the same room, stopped eating the same meals and rarely talked unless it was in argument.

Their Eye's Were Watching God ~ Important Scene
I think the most important scene is when Joe and Janie meet in Chapter 4. If it hadn't been for Joe, I don't think Janie would have set herself free from Logan Killicks. Although she was never inlove with Logan, I think if Joe hadn't given her the out, she would still be with him, because he gave her a place to live, and without him, and with Nanny gone, she would have had no where else to live. Also, if she hadn't met Joe, she wouldn;t have started a new life in a new town, that she had to build with the townsmen, and she would still be under the rules of Logan, who could have even killed her, which he had threatened to do before she fled. The whole storyline would have been different had it not been for the meeting of Joe and I believe that to be the most important Scene so far.

Their Eye's Were Watching God Pg. 1-20
The first quote is about how men will chase their dreams and never take their eye off the gold. Women however, don't pay much attention to dreams, and only focus on what they need to do, remembering what they want and forgetting the rest. I think this quote is Ironic in the since that Janie went far away from this little town, and chased down what she wanted, and lived the way she wanted. The men in the small town however, spend all there time talking about others, and doing there choirs. This shows that the woman chased her dream, but the men sat at home and held on to the memories they wanted, and let go of the rest, which makes the quote opposite of what it is stating.
The second quote is about how Janie feels when she is alone and has no care in the world. She is used to having a busy life with a lot of work to be done, and rarely has time to herself. The quote paints a piccture of the world and nature, and how beautiful things there are in life and around her. But suddenly it hits her that there is so much bad going on around her, and that she is to be merried and she has no intensions in having to get merried. She then relizes that is merriage is a beautiful and free as this nature, maybe it wouldn't be that bad, she just doesn't want to end up with someone she doesn't love, and she wants to be able to pick who she wants to Marry.

Huck Fin
““Mf! And we reckoned the niggers stole it!”
That me made me squirm!”
This quote sums up a lot of the book in just these few words. It shows what time period they were living in, because they have slaves and use the word “nigger” which, in this time, was accepted. It also shows how little respect they had to blacks, and how horribly they were treated, and how if something went wrong, instead of searching for proof of who’s fault it was, they automatically blame the slave. This quote also shows how Huck feels toward there remark and how he by now, he feels like Jim is his friend, not someone who should be treated this way. In just these few words it describes the mentality of each different character.
“Miss Watson, your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville, and Mr. Phelps has got him and he will give him up for the reward if you send”
This quote is ironic, because throughout the book they talk about how slaves are worthless and are good for nothing, but working, and they aren’t even that good at it, but then they are searching all over for one slave and putting a reward on him.

Emily Dickinson - Transcendentalism
I believe Emily Dickinson was a Transcendentalist writter, because she relates everything to how she feels toward things and how nature affects her feelings. She is always coming up with new ideas and imagining what something she hasn't seen would look like. She feels very strongly about being individual and working by yourself to accomplish something, but not letting someone else change your oppinions on things. She uses both culture, religion, and nature to philosophize what she believes what life is, which is exactly what transcendentalism is.

Song of Myself - Walt Whitman
"Failing to fetch me t first keep encouraged, Missing me one place search another, I spot somewhere waiting for you."
- This quote talks about how he will always be waiting for the one seeking him, and that they shouldn't stop once they have looked in one place, but to continue looking until they find him, because he will be waiting for the seeker. This relates to the story, because a lot about himself, and thee good and bad trates he has. It shows that no matter how you feel about him, he will always be waiting for you, and wont continue is journey until you have found him.
"The old husband sleeps by his wife, and the young husband sleeps by his wife."
- This quote is saying that a young man should be with his wife, and an old should be by his. Not refering to marriage, but to times. He feels the young men should stay in there time. He claims that over time, the world changes and that the old man shouldn't try and act like the young man, and the young man should try to act like the old man, but act as though they are expected to. This relates to the story, because Witman talks about how each man does whjat each man is supposed to do, sticks to that job, and doesn't try to change and do something, that isn't there thing.

The Minidter's Black Veil
""But what has good Parson Hooper got upon his face?" cried the sexton in astonishment
-This quote shows a lot aabout how the people in the town, feel about the veil over his face. It shows that people aare truly afraid of him and don't know how to accept what he believes is the right thing to do. This is a good quote for the story, because if relates to how in the begining of the story, he feels as though it doesn't fase him in the least, but by the end he finds it very hard to be accepted and it is extreamly hard for him, but he still will not take it off. He loses his fiance and is treated differenlty by all people, but he just wont take it off. He also states that if just one person could love him with it on, he would be able to take it off, and though everyone knows that, they just wont accept it.
"An unsought pathos cam hand in hand with awe."
-This is another god wuote to describe how they are feeling. They all feel very scared, and no one knows quite what to do, it brings a feeling of guilt to their minds, for all the horrible stuff they had ever done, btu he is payinghis do's and none of them have even admitted to it. The wsh for the wind to just blow the veil away and take the feel of sorrow with it, but nothing could remove the feeling they had within them. This goes hand in hand with the story, because this is what the black velied man wanted people to feel, but none the less he wanted to be accepted with it, and although everyone knew that, and felt horrible for things they had done, they just coulnd't beer accept what he was doing to himself. The man tries to bring people to admit what they haave done, but nothing seemed to help.

Young Goodman Brown
“There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree”
- In the world, good isn’t a gift, for no matter what you are given, there is always bad that comes with it. This quote is using the example about Indians and trees, because they are walking along through the woods, and there are all these lovely trees around them. Normally that would be good, but since you can’t have good without bad, there must be some sort of bad that comes along with it, and behind a good tree, could be a bad Indian.
“This is a dull place for the beginning of a journey. Take my staff, if you are so soon weary”
- This quote is saying, this is only the beginning of your journey, if you can’t make it, I will lend you a hand, but I can’t be there forever and soon enough you wont be able to make it through anything without me and you’ll fall, because you can’t hold yourself up and stand on your own two feet, you need someone there to do it for you. I’ll do that if it is what you really want, but pretty soon, you’ll see is all I did was tear you down.

Henry David Thoreau, Journal Entries
" Nature never makes hates; her systems revolve at an even pace"
-This quote is saying, that no matter how hard life is and how much you have to work, nature will always be there. It doesn't hate for things you can't do, or things you shouldn't have done, and it always works at your pace. If you become sick, nature stays the same when you get back on your feet, it doesn't change, itdoesn't surprise you, by being more moved ahead than you can take. Nature never turns it's back on you, it never hurts you, and it never lets you be alone, because no matter how hard you work for something, or how lonely you feel, you will always have the company of nature.
"The Wise man is restful, never restless or impatient"
-This quote says that the wisest man is only the man, who has had the most sleep, for durring his waking hours, he is fully awake and hasd full understanding of the world around him. If a wise man gets little sleep although he may be very smart, durring his waking hours he spends more time tired, and less time fully understanding whats going on around him. Although many men can be geniuses, that function better then rested for there brain is most fucused and not of day dreaming.

Henry David Thoreau
"The millions are awake enough for physical labor; but only one in a million is awake enough for effective intellectual exertion, only one in a hundred million to a poetic or divine life."
-I think this quote mean that although every morning millions of people are awake physically they are not awake mentally, meaning that when people get up in the morning it seems easier for them to go run a mile then to be able to think about something throughly and be able to find a solution to a problem. Only one out of a hundred million people are able to wake up and have the same mind set as poet, because not many people are able to have enough energy to think about a solution to a problem, let alone go to the extream of being able to think like a poet.
"We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expection of the dawn, which does not for sake us in our soundest sleep."
-This quote means, when the sun rises so should the man, for the day has just begun. The man however should not use medications to wake himself such as an alarm, or to keep him awake, but only by the nature. He should be well rested and wake up with the sun. It is hard for the man to wake himself so early, if he has no purpose to get him up.

Goals for the Term
This term in American lit. I hope to find a good understanding of the subject. I also love writters and love to be able to quote them.I also want to have a better understanding of how different American writers write. My favorite American Author is Henry David Thoreau, whom I quote all the time and refer to him in every day life.
